[Freight Weekly] Correction: Typhoon Gaemi Update

Port of LA Sued, NTSB upset with DEA

⛈️A cargo ship off the coast of Taiwan’s Port of Kaohsiung due to conditions brought on by Typhoon Gaemi; crew members are still missing⛈️

Gaemi is storming across Asia, literally. Now making landfall in the Chinese province of Fujian at the time of this writing, the storm sunk a Tanzanian flag freighter with nine crew who are Myanmar nationals having fallen overboard:

  • The vessel lost was the cargo freighter Fu Shun, which was sunk as Typhoon Gaemi caused devastation across Taiwan. Many other vessels were also affected by central container ports, like the Kaohsiung port.

  • The Loadstar reports that Fu Shun was last reported as being 19 nautical miles off Kaohsiung around 5:45 a.m. It sank an hour later.

  • At the time of this writing, six crew members are still reported missing. Two crew members, including another mate, were rescued by locals.

  • A report from the English-language news outlet Taiwan News reports, “Rough seas and high winds hampered search and rescue efforts.”

  • MT Terra Nova, an oil tanker, capsized off the coast of Bataan in The Philippines. Several other vessels were damaged across the area.

  • Typhoon Gaemi continues to batter the China coast, impacting trade.

Bottom line: The vessels lost during Typhoon Gaemi are diverse and highlight Mother Nature's impact on international trade within the region and the globe.
